Yep, it's true - you can find the best of the best out there just by aiming the "site:" operator at most any active social bookmarking site. For example, say you're looking for good WordPress templates. You could try this search string:

You're going to come back with some pretty good stuff this way for the most part, and since most sites search functions ain't that great, it's also a good option for unearthing the stuff you might not have otherwise.

One thing lead to another. In my previous post, I talked about a paradox of programmers not being able to program - just like plumbers not being able to plumb. Ahem !
A paradigm-shift is how to become a better programmer by not programming. Coding Horror told us that there's a vast divide between those who can program and those who cannot. But the dirty little secret of the software development industry is that this is also true even for people who can program: there's a vast divide between good developers and mediocre developers. A mediocre developer can program his or her heart out for four years, but that won't magically transform them into a good developer. And the good developers always seem to have a natural knack for the stuff from the very beginning. The older I get, the more I believe that the only way to become a better programmer is by not programming. You have to come up for air, put down the compiler for a moment, and take stock of what you're really doing. Code is important, but it's a small part of the overall process.
Why can't programmers program ?
Its been a week of long interviews...3 to be exact. Experience has taught me that its always better to format your interviews as two-way discussions rather than "I ask you question and wait for your *watever* answers.." If you discuss something with the candidate, you can force something out of him which she herself might not know she knew.
Its always fun to talk to people who can program well. So far, I have found very few of the candidates who know what they are talking about. Its not that they are not trained or they do not have necessary skills - experience but they simply can't program.
I was reading "Why Can't Programmers.. Program?" this morning. It is sad - but near close to true. I do not believe 199 out of 200 cannot program - but it isn't too far from the truth. So, if you are interviewing a lot, my sincere advice to you...discuss rather then ask and make them write programs - lots of programs. [My wife demanded that I credit her for this article]

GooglePhone coming soon ?
The much anticipated and highly rumored Google mobile phone has been confirmed. Google's Chief Executive in Spain and Portugal has let slip that an "iPhone competitor" is in the works. The Google Exec downplayed the Google phone project, saying that its one of 18 current R&D projects in the works.
The "gPhone" may not be what you expected however, word has it the embryonic device might not be an iPhone killer after all. Google may be targeting developing countries with this device, so in order to cut costs GPS, touch screens, etc. might be out. Think "One Laptop per child" in mobile phone form. [via Endadget]
