Auslogics Task Manager Tracks Process I/O Usage

Free, portable system utility Auslogics Task Manager helps you troubleshoot a PC by tracking CPU, disk, memory, and internet usage for every process on your system.

sshot-2009-08-21-14-27-49

Auslogics Task Manager is very similar to Process Explorer, arguably the best of the bunch. Where Auslogics Task Manager shines, however, is that it's extremely simple and easy to figure out which processes are utilizing the hard drive or network connection—you can even select a specific process and see just how much a specific process is hitting the disk. Like many other utilities, you can also search for an unknown process to figure out what it is, or you can see a list of open files to see what is locking a particular file.

Auslogics Task Manager is a free download for Windows only. Readers should note that the regular setup tries to force the awful Ask Toolbar onto your computer, so you'll want to grab the crapware-free portable version instead.

How to share a keyboard and mouse between two computers

I recently started working on two machines. A linux desktop and a Windows XP laptop. Two machines, two keyboards and two mice - a nightmare.
A little research and some freeware goodness guided me to Synergy - a freeware tool to control two machines with one mouse and a single keyboard.
A nice little feature about Synergy is that it can control computers, even if they are different operating systems, which is really helpful if (like a lot of people) you have an XP and Vista or linux and Windows. To change the computer you wish to control, just move the mouse off the screen, it’s as simple as that.

Synergy

Synergy also supports the ‘Clipboard’ feature. My favorite feature of Synergy, though, is the fact it automatically synchronizes the screen savers of the computer’s it is controlling, so they start and stop at the same time. And, in addition to that, it can password-unlock all the computers with one password, so no need to go around unlocking all of the computers if they automatically lock.

To download Synergy, go here http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=59275&release_id=406637.

Humyo Provides 30GB of Free Online Storage

Web site Humyo offers 30GB of free online storage with a small and inconsequential catch: 25 of the 30GB must be media files, like music and videos. The remaining 5GB are reserved for non-media files and documents. Once uploaded, files are organized in Humyo's user-friendly interface, which identifies filetypes and even organizes media by metadata (e.g., music can be sorted through by artist, album, etc.). Humyo offers a Windows client that maps a network drive directly to your Humyo account for drag-and-drop uploads and downloads Humyo [via Download Squad]Technorati Tags:

21 Awesome (But Lesser-Known) Open-Source Applications for Windows (Tech Tips For Us)

Understand HijackThis Results with HijackReader

We discussed a the usefulness of HijackThis in the previous article, but only if you can understand exactly what it's telling you is running. Free utility HijackReader does the leg work of checking with trusted web databases and providing Google search links to help you understand what's running on your system and whether you can safely get rid of it. It works by taking a HijackThis log file (by browsing or cut-and-paste) and analyzing its contents, then producing an HTML file with descriptions and relevant links to more information. Even if you don't quite grasp every process it reports on, seeing the "OK" next to something you're suspicious of can be a big relief. HijackReader is a free download for Windows systems only.

Manage browser add-ons with HijackThis

One good indicator that your PC is host to malicious software is web browser wonkiness. (Yes, that's the technical term.).  But fear not. HijackThis is a freeware tool that "lists all installed browser add-ons, buttons, startup items and allows you to inspect, and optionally remove selected items." The app can help not only disable malware, but to optimize your browser startup. The problem with HijackThis is that it doesn't identify malicious browser add-ons; it leaves the decisions about what to disable up to you. Recommended for advanced users.

VideoSpin: Free video editor

Clipboard01

Windows Movie Maker is probably the most widely used free video editor for Windows. And there's a good reason for that. It comes free with Windows XP and Vista. But Windows Movie Maker might not always be the best tool for the job. VideoSpin is a free video editing application that has all the features of Windows Movie Maker and a few more for good measure.
Overall, the two applications have a similar look and feel. Both are designed for use by people who don't have a degree in video editing. You simply locate your video and audio files, arrange them on a timeline, and start snipping or rearranging. You can add a variety of transitions or sound effects to your movie. And unlike Windows Movie Maker, VideoSpin sports a pretty decent title editor. There's also an option to upload your finished videos directly to YouTube or Yahoo! Video.
The program is almost too user friendly in some places. For example, VideoSpin assumes your files are in your My Videos folder, which is fair. But while you can easily change directories, there's no simple way to navigate to a separate hard drive or partition. Fortunately, you can drag and drop audio and video files into VideoSpin from Windows Explorer, no matter what drive their on.
