Skip Gym – Go NEAT.

Geeks don’t like gymming, running, swimming, etc. But that’s not the only way to burn calories. Incorporating more NEAT activities into your day, also known as non-exercise activity, can also help.

Studies show that lean people fidget for about 150 minutes a day more than obese people do. That kind of low-grade activity (tapping feet and fingers, twirling hair, gesturing while speaking, etc.) can burn 350 calories a day, which translates into 10-30 pounds a year! It's called Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT), which is basically any movement that isn't intended as exercise. You can burn an extra 100-150 calories an hour by increasing NEAT.

ulcer blues ?

I am tired of the repetitive attack of mouth ulcers. Sometimes I have a couple of them strategically located inside my mouth. I researched for it and compiled some information which might be useful for people suffering from this nuisance. This article is not intended to replace the certified medical opinion.

A mouth ulcer (from Latin ulcus - also known as canker sores) is the name for the appearance of an open sore inside the mouth caused by a break in the mucous membrane or the epithelium on the lips or surrounding the mouth. The types of mouth ulcers are diverse, with a multitude of associated causes including: physical or chemical trauma, infection from microorganisms or viruses, medical conditions or medications, cancerous and sometimes onspecific processes. The causes are varied and some very unlikely substances can cause mouth ulcers but stress and irregular teeth tops the list.

There are several common treatments for ulcers (ofcourse your Doctor would tell you more). B-complex vitamins, folic acid, and iron (taken separately or combined in a multivitamin) can help prevent recurrent outbreaks, since canker sores are often associated with deficiencies in these nutrients. Since canker sores heal themselves in most cases, treatment usually isn't necessary. Topical anesthetics, such as lidocaine and similar remedies, may be used for relief. Good oral hygiene is necessary to prevent recurrent outbreaks as well as secondary bacterial infections during an outbreak. This includes regular brushing, flossing, and regular trips to the dentist. Dentures, braces, and fillings should be rechecked and possibly refitted. Toothpastes containing sodium lauryl sulfate should not be used.

How to live longer

Forbes lists 10 ways to live longer, including having more sex (woo), not sleeping too much (boo), getting a dog, reducing stress, eating your fruits and veggies and marrying “well.”
This entirely oversimplified list is apparently based on actual scientific research, explained beneath cutesy graphics in a slideshow that accompanies the article (click on the sidebar to see).

Prevent RSI

Lets begin our journey to uberGeekdom with something important. Our n hour long stretches on the box has some alarming affect on our physique and psyche.

Among all the adverse effects, the most painful is RSI.
I neglected the numbing feeling in my right wrist for a while but could not ignore the shooting pain. I've been too laissez-faire about it myself, and I've suffered for it.
During last two weeks, I changed my working style and would like to share some tips with you.

  • Get yourself a tiny timer. Setup small timers. The timer should stop you at these small intervals and ask you to relax. The best tool I found was http://www.workrave.org/welcome/
  • Follow the instructions as per the timer program and try NOT to neglect the small breaks (the usual break I keep is for 30 seconds every 5 mins)
  • WorkRave also suggests exercises that you can do during those short breaks. Follow those.
  • DO NOT MULTITASK. Multitasking is good for machines, not for us.
  • Stop using mouse where keyboard would do. Learn common keystroke replacement. If you are uberGeek, use AutoHotKey
If you find some other tips ... share them.
